About
Charles D. Brown (July 1, 1887 – November 25, 1948) was an American actor who worked across both stage and screen, building careers in each medium simultaneously. A native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Brown sustained a Broadway presence spanning more than two decades, from 1911 through 1937, while also accumulating an extensive body of film work.
His stage credits included appearances in Page Miss Glory, Puppets, The Book of Charm, Gold, and The Commodore Marries, among other productions. Beyond performing, Brown demonstrated additional creative ambitions early in his career, writing and directing a short film in 1914.
His work in cinema proved prolific. Beginning in 1921, Brown appeared in more than 100 films over the course of his career, a run that continued until his death in 1948. The breadth of that output placed him among the more active character actors of his era in Hollywood.
Brown died on November 25, 1948, in Hollywood, California, at the age of 61. He is interred at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood.
