About

Charles Bressler (April 1, 1926 – November 28, 1996) was an American tenor born in Kingston, Pennsylvania. He pursued his musical training at the Juilliard School under the instruction of Lucia Dunham, and went on to build a career spanning concert performance, recording, teaching, and the Broadway stage.

Bressler was a founding member of the New York Pro Musica, an ensemble with which he toured from 1953 to 1963. His work in early music became a defining element of his professional reputation. He also served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, where he taught during his career.

His Broadway appearances took place between 1955 and 1957 and included two productions: The Lark and A Shadow of My Enemy. The Lark, in which he appeared in 1956 at the Longacre Theatre in New York City, starred Julie Harris. A Shadow of My Enemy, categorized as a drama, rounded out his credited stage work from that period.

Bressler contributed to a number of significant recordings. With Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony, he participated in recordings for the Vanguard label, among them a recording of the Berlioz Requiem. He also appeared on a Los Angeles Philharmonic recording of Respighi's Lauda per la Natività del Signore, a project that featured Marilyn Horne, Marie Gibson, and the Roger Wagner Chorale under the direction of Alfred Wallenstein.

Bressler died in New York City on November 28, 1996, at the age of 70.
