About
Charles John Borland Smith is an American actor born in Minneapolis who has worked across film, stage, and television. On Broadway, his career spanned from 2005 to 2016, with credits including A Streetcar Named Desire, Twelve Angry Men, A Man for All Seasons, and The Father.
Borland made his Broadway debut in A Streetcar Named Desire, playing Harold Mitchell and Stanley Kowalski during the production's April through July 2005 run. He subsequently joined the national tour of Twelve Angry Men as Juror #6, a role he performed across two consecutive seasons, from September 2006 through May 2007 and again from September 2007 through May 2008. In the fall of 2008, he appeared on Broadway in A Man for All Seasons, portraying the Jailor from October through December of that year. His final Broadway credit came in 2016, when he played Man in Le Père, the French-language production also known as The Father, which ran from March through June.
Beyond Broadway, Borland appeared Off-Broadway in a Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night as Antonio at the Delacorte Theater in the summer of 2009, presented by The Public Theater. The following year, he performed in Spirit Control, a play by Beau Willimon, at Manhattan Theatre Club, taking on the roles of FAA Official and Bill from October through December 2010.
His film work includes roles in Into the Fire, Premium Rush, The Happy House, and The Cobbler, released between 2005 and 2014. In 2020, Borland co-founded VOLTAKU, a company of which he serves as CEO.
