About
Charlene Gehm MacDougal (December 14, 1951 – January 10, 2021) was an American ballet dancer and actress whose career encompassed classical ballet, Broadway, and international performance. Born in Miami, Florida, to Verna Mae (Wiley) Gehm, a caterer, and Charles William Gehm, a high school chemistry teacher, she began studying dance at age six at the Marion Lorraine Dance School, training in multiple styles. Following the death of her older sister in a car accident, Gehm, then ten years old, committed herself fully to dance, performing in choreographed routines at Miami's tourist hotels with the support of her parents. At seventeen, she received a scholarship to the Harkness Ballet School in New York City and joined the Harkness Youth Dancers in 1969 under the mentorship of Ben Stevenson.
Her ballet career took her through several prominent companies before she found her longest professional home. She danced with the National Ballet of Washington, D.C. from 1971 to 1973, followed by engagements with the Chicago Ballet in 1974 and Ballet de Caracas in 1975. In 1976, Robert Joffrey signed her to a long-term contract upon first meeting her, and she remained with the Joffrey Ballet for fifteen years. Her range within the company was considerable, spanning roles such as the ethereal nymph in Nijinsky's L'Après-Midi d'un Faune and the comedic tipsy guest in Ashton's A Wedding Bouquet, for which the New York Times praised her ability to draw laughter from audiences while performing with subtlety, grace, and a touch of the bittersweet. She also appeared in productions including Romeo and Juliet, Rodeo, and Le Sacre du Printemps, and collaborated with Rudolf Nureyev. Choreographer William Forsythe described her as one of the most elegant dancers he had the privilege to work with, and in 1984 Robert Joffrey told People Weekly that at five feet seven inches and 110 pounds, she was the most gorgeous woman since Audrey Hepburn to put on leotards and tights.
Gehm's stage work extended to Broadway, where she performed between 1979 and 1988. Her credits included West Side Story, Homage to Diaghilev, and The Phantom of the Opera. Alongside her performance career, she modeled for Sergio Valente jeans, Capezio and Danskin dancewear, and Hallmark Cards, and appeared in commercials for the Chi-Chi's restaurant chain.
After retiring from professional dance in 1991, Gehm pursued academic study. She earned a bachelor's degree in arts administration from New York University in 1994, delivering the commencement address at her graduation, and later completed a master's degree in medieval studies at Columbia University in 1998, with a thesis focused on the stained glass windows of Canterbury Cathedral. In 1992 she married Gary MacDougal, a businessman and philanthropist, and together they supported education and cultural initiatives, including work connected to the America for Bulgaria Foundation. As president of the MacDougal Family Foundation, she provided scholarships for underprivileged students and promoted arts education. Charlene Gehm MacDougal died on January 10, 2021, from ovarian cancer.
