About
Chandler Ruel Cowles (September 29, 1917 – February 1, 1997) was an American actor and producer born in New Haven, Connecticut. Over the course of his career, he was involved in at least eleven New York theatrical productions spanning from 1946 through 1960.
Cowles's Broadway performing credits included Call Me Mister, The Cradle Will Rock, Men of Distinction, and the musical Small Wonder, with his stage work concentrated between 1946 and 1953. He also worked as a producer, collaborating with composer Gian-Carlo Menotti and actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. on multiple productions. Among his producing credits was the 1947 Broadway production of The Telephone/The Medium, on which he worked alongside choreographer and ballet figure George Balanchine, who remained a lifelong friend. Beyond the stage, Cowles wrote the 1983 television program I, Leonardo: A Journey of the Mind.
Cowles was the father of actor Matthew Cowles. He died on February 1, 1997, in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 79, and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Westmore, Vermont.
