About

Chamberlain Brown (April 1, 1892 – November 12, 1955) was an American theater impresario whose work in the industry spanned acting, producing, casting, publishing, and broadcasting. Born to George M. Brown, a department store owner, and Delorius Brown, née Chamberlain, daughter of Samuel E. Chamberlain, Brown grew up alongside his brother Lyman, who would later become his professional partner. Their father played an active role in launching and financing Chamberlain's entry into the theater business.

The two brothers developed an early passion for the stage, collecting theater mementos and autographs from a young age. Together they kept a diary documenting their attendance at vaudeville and theatrical productions in Boston and New York City between 1909 and 1914. The New York Public Library holds a collection of their papers.

Brown made his Broadway debut in 1912, appearing in The Yellow Jacket. He and Lyman went on to build a casting and representation firm whose client roster included prominent figures such as Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Brown also had a hand in shaping individual careers, among them Jean Arthur, whom he helped place in a New York City production, and Mary Orr, for whom he played a role in securing a casting opportunity with director Preston Sturges despite reportedly declining to meet with her directly.

In addition to his stage and agency work, Brown hosted radio programs centered on the theater, including Stars of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, which featured celebrity guests in each episode. He also published theatrical publications as part of his broader engagement with the industry. In 1932, he mounted Chamberlain Brown's Scrapbook, a musical revue presented in vaudeville style, which served as the final performance of Ina Hayward.
