About
Celia Keenan-Bolger is an American actress and singer born on January 26, 1978, in Detroit, Michigan, where she was the eldest of three children. Her siblings are a sister, Maggie, and a brother, Andrew. She began her theatrical training at the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and the Detroit School of Arts High School, and also attended Interlochen Center for the Arts. She later earned a degree in musical theatre performance from the University of Michigan.
Before arriving on Broadway, Keenan-Bolger built a substantial regional career. In 2002, she played Johanna in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration, and she also worked at the Goodman Theatre, TheatreWorks, and the Sundance Theatre Program. In 2003, she originated the role of Clara Johnson in the world premiere of Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel's The Light in the Piazza, which ran at Seattle's Intiman Theatre and Chicago's Goodman Theatre prior to its Broadway transfer. Her Off-Broadway credits include Kindertransport, Little Fish, and Summer of '42. She also appeared in the Playwrights Horizons production of Saved, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, and in productions of Bachelorette and Adam Bock's A Small Fire at Second Stage Theatre, the latter opposite Michele Pawk and Reed Birney.
Keenan-Bolger made her Broadway debut in 2005 originating the role of Olive Ostrovsky in William Finn's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, earning her first Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She had followed the production from its origins at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in July 2004, through its Off-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre in early 2005. She returned to the show for a four-week limited engagement at the Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles in 2007. That same year, she joined the Broadway revival of Les Misérables as Éponine, running from October 2006 through April 2007, a performance that earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination.
In 2011, Keenan-Bolger starred in the New York Theatre Workshop production of Peter and the Starcatcher, playing Molly, and reprised the role when the production transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where it ran from March 2012 through January 2013. The performance brought her both a Drama Desk Award nomination and a second Tony Award nomination. She next played Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, first at the American Repertory Theater alongside Cherry Jones, Zachary Quinto, and Brian J. Smith, and then in the production's Broadway transfer at the Booth Theatre, which ran from September 2013 through February 2014. That role earned her a third Tony nomination. In 2014, she starred in Sarah Ruhl's The Oldest Boy at Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, and in 2016 she played Varya in the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of The Cherry Orchard.
Keenan-Bolger's most decorated Broadway performance came with To Kill a Mockingbird, in which she portrayed Scout Finch. The production opened in December 2018 and ran until March 2020, when it closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She reprised the role when the production reopened in October 2021, playing her final performance on January 2, 2022. For her work as Scout, she received the 2019 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, the 2019 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama League Award nomination.
In 2024, Keenan-Bolger starred in Paula Vogel's Mother Play opposite Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons at the Hayes Theatre, as part of Second Stage Theatre's 2023–2024 season. Previews began April 3 and the production opened April 25, running through June 16, 2024. The role brought her a fourth Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play and the 2024 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play.
Beyond the stage, Keenan-Bolger appeared on the concept cast album of Bright Lights, Big City, performed in concert at the Lincoln Center American Songbook Series and at the Michigan Theatre alongside Audra McDonald, and starred as Mary Flynn in the Encores! production of Merrily We Roll Along at New York City Center in February 2012. She joined the cast of HBO's The Gilded Age as Mrs. Bruce, appearing in the first season and returning as a series regular for the second season, filmed in 2022. She became an end-of-life doula in 2022. Keenan-Bolger has been married to actor John Ellison Conlee since 2010, and the couple have a son born in 2015.
