About
Born April 29, 1917, in Brooklyn to Theodor Holm and Jean Parke Holm, Celeste Holm studied at the University of Chicago before taking her first roles in summer stock and community theater during the 1930s. She married five times: Ralph Nelson, Francis E. H. Davies, A. Schuyler Dunning, Wesley Addy, and Frank Basile. Her two sons were Theodor Nelson and Daniel Dunning. A life member of The Actors Studio, she was appointed to the National Arts Council by Ronald Reagan.
Film credits include "Gentleman's Agreement," "The Snake Pit," "Come to the Stable," "All About Eve," "High Society," "The Tender Trap," "A Letter to Three Wives," "3 Men and a Baby," "Alchemy," "Tom Sawyer," and "Bachelor Flat." On television she appeared in "Honestly, Celeste!," "Nancy," "Promised Land," "Falcon Crest," "Cinderella," "Cheers," "Columbo," and "The Love Boat."
She won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for "Gentleman's Agreement" in 1948, received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960, and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1992.
Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on July 16, 2012.
