About

Cathleen Cordell (May 21, 1915 – August 19, 1997) was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, radio, and television across nearly five decades. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she spent much of her childhood abroad after her father's business took the family to India, then to France, where at age seven she was enrolled in a French boarding school. She later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, an education that contributed to the English accent she carried despite her Brooklyn origins.

Cordell began her stage career in England with It's You I Want, produced by Seymour Hicks' company. Her first significant American role came on August 17, 1937, in Never Trouble Trouble at the Brighton Theater in Brooklyn, where a local newspaper identified her as a discovery of producer John Golden. That same year she made her Broadway debut in Love of Women. Over the following decade she accumulated a range of Broadway credits, appearing in Romantic Mr. Dickens (1940), the drama Golden Wings (1941), Yesterday's Magic (1942), the comedy Sheppey (1944), the comedy While the Sun Shines (1944), and The Linden Tree (1948).

Her film career began in 1938 with Who Killed Cock Robin?, and she went on to star in the British production Gaslight (1940) alongside Anton Walbrook, playing Nancy the housemaid — a role that Angela Lansbury would later take in the American remake. During World War II, Cordell lived in England and worked for the BBC. She was also a prolific radio performer, holding recurring roles on Hilltop House as Vicky McLain, Amanda as Eve Fuller, Valiant Lady as Monica Brewster, and Counterspy, while also appearing on programs including Quiet Please, Grand Central Station, and The March of Time.

On television, Cordell appeared in two episodes each of Perry Mason and Family Affair, three episodes of Dragnet 1967, a 1963 episode of Wagon Train in which she played Mrs. Lawson, and the premiere episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery in 1970, playing Mrs. Beamish. She continued working in film and television until 1985, when her final screen appearance came in The Return of the Living Dead. Cordell died on August 19, 1997, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at the age of 82.
