About

Catherine Hickland, born February 11, 1956, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is an American actress, singer, author, cosmetics entrepreneur, and hypnotist whose work spans film, stage, and television. The daughter of Arthur Hickland, a dentist, and Mary Hickland, a dental ceramist, she grew up in Fort Lauderdale alongside one brother and one sister. After graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1974, Hickland enrolled at Florida Atlantic University before leaving after two years to work as a flight attendant for National Airlines. A commercial she made for the airline prompted her departure for Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Hickland's professional television career began in 1978 with guest appearances across multiple series. Her first substantial role came in 1980 when she was cast as Dr. Courtney Marshall on the daytime drama Texas, a part she held through 1981. She subsequently joined the cast of Capitol as Julie Clegg McCandless from 1984 to 1987, and also took on the dual role of Jenny Diamond on that series from 1985 to 1986. During the same period, while engaged to David Hasselhoff, she appeared in three episodes of his series Knight Rider — "White Bird" on March 4, 1983, "Let It Be Me" on May 13, 1984, and "The Scent of Roses" on January 3, 1986 — playing Stephanie "Stevie" Mason, a character who was engaged to Hasselhoff's Michael Knight. She also contributed vocals to Hasselhoff's debut record Night Rocker, performing on the tracks "Our First Night Together" and "Let It Be Me." In 1985, she appeared in 15 episodes of the game show Body Language.

In 1987, Hickland stepped in for Katherine Kelly Lang as Brooke Logan on The Bold and the Beautiful while Lang was ill. That same year marked the beginning of her Broadway engagement, during which she appeared in Les Misérables between 1987 and 1988. She returned to the production in 1995, playing the role of Fantine. Also in 1995, she performed with the National Symphony de Lyon in Lyon, France. Her stage work during the early-to-mid 1990s also included the role of Tess Wilder on the daytime serial Loving from 1993 to 1995, which continued on its successor series The City from 1995 to 1997.

Hickland's most sustained television role came with the soap opera One Life to Live, where she portrayed Lindsay Rappaport from 1998 to 2008, reprising the character in 2009 and again in 2012. Her guest credits across her career include CHiPs in 1983, Airwolf in 1985, and Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent between 2001 and 2005. On the film side, she appeared in the comedy The Last Married Couple in America in 1980 and in the horror films Ghost Town and Witchery, both released in 1988.

In 2001, Hickland released a music recording titled Sincerely Broadway and founded Cat Cosmetics, her own cosmetics line, serving as its CEO. She has also written a column on cosmetics and skin care for Soap Opera Digest. Her first book, The 30 Day Heartbreak Cure: A Guide to Getting Over Him and Back Out There One Month From Today, was published by Simon & Schuster in December 2008. A second book, Cat & Fern's Excellent God Adventure: Daily Inspirations for 365 Days of Heaven On Earth, co-written with Fern Underwood and Lindsay Harrison, followed in December 2014. Since 2008, she has additionally worked as a hypnotist.

Hickland's personal life has included four marriages. She first wed Richard Ernest Knowlton on October 10, 1981, in Fort Lauderdale; the marriage ended in divorce on March 23, 1982. Her second marriage, to David Hasselhoff, lasted from March 24, 1984, to March 1, 1989. On June 27, 1992, she married All My Children actor Michael E. Knight, and the two lived together in Manhattan until their divorce in 2006. She subsequently married producer Todd Fisher on December 22, 2012; the couple maintain a home in Las Vegas and a ranch in California. Hickland identifies as a Christian.
