About

Catherine Calvert, born Catherine Cassidy on April 20, 1890, in Baltimore, Maryland, was an American stage and film actress whose career spanned from the early 1900s through the early 1920s. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cassidy, she made her professional stage debut in Brown of Harvard in Albany, New York, in September 1908.

Calvert's Broadway career ran from 1911 to 1921 and included three notable productions. She appeared as Doris Moore in The Deep Purple in 1911, a play written by Paul Armstrong, who would later become her husband. She went on to star as May Joyce in The Escape in 1913, and rounded out her Broadway work with the role of Dona Sol in Blood and Sand in 1921.

Calvert married Armstrong in New Haven in 1913, the same year she appeared in The Escape. The marriage lasted until Armstrong's death in 1915. She subsequently married Canadian grain exporter George A. Carruthers, who died in 1952.

In addition to her stage work, Calvert transitioned to film beginning in 1918, entering the industry through Keeney Pictures Corporation with A Romance of the Underworld, a project based on a play in which she had previously performed onstage. Around 1920, she was a featured performer at Vitagraph Studios. Her film credits include Marriage, Out of the Night, The Career of Katherine Bush, Marriage for Convenience, and Fires of Faith, among others.

Calvert died on January 18, 1971, in Uniondale, New York, at the age of 80.
