About
Carrie Bowman, born Caroline Bohrmann on January 14, 1887, was an American stage actress whose Broadway career spanned from 1901 to 1911. She was the daughter of Leopold "Lee" Bohrmann (1853–1925) and Bertha Moses (1866–1918), and a granddaughter of Marx Moses (1832–1913), a Jewish cantor and rabbi originally from Essingen, Germany, who served Reform Jewish communities in America.
During her decade on Broadway, Bowman appeared in a range of productions across multiple genres. Her credits included the musical The Rich Mr. Hoggenheimer, The American Idea, DuHurry, the musical The Dream Girl, and the burlesque Humming Birds and Onions, among other productions.
Following her Broadway years, Bowman continued performing on tour. It was during a post-Broadway touring production of The Girl of My Dreams — a musical with book by Wilbur D. Nesbit, music by Hoschna, and lyrics by Harbach — that she met her future husband. On April 7, 1912, in Huntington, West Virginia, Bowman married Thomas Harold Forbes (1885–1953), her vaudeville partner and a member of a printing family from New Rochelle, New York. The couple retired from the stage and settled in New Rochelle, where Forbes built a chain of suburban newspapers beginning with the New Rochelle Standard-Star. They had five children together.
Thomas Harold Forbes died in 1953, after which Bowman relocated to Westhampton Beach, New York. She died there on November 14, 1971. Among her descendants is Michael Patrick Forbes (born 1952), a grandson who served as a U.S. Congressman from New York.
