Carra Patterson is an American actress born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, whose mother was 16 at the time of her birth. She trained at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts before launching a career that has spanned theater, film, and television.
Patterson's stage work began with off-Broadway productions before she made her Broadway debut in 2012 in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Wit, which starred Cynthia Nixon. She returned to Broadway in 2017, appearing in August Wilson's Jitney. Between those two engagements, she continued working in off-Broadway productions including Luck of the Irish, Significant Other, and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark.
Her film career began with a supporting role in the 2010 romantic comedy-drama Why Did I Get Married Too? In 2015, she appeared in the biographical drama Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray. In 2023, she portrayed civil rights leader Coretta Scott King in the biographical drama Rustin, directed by George C. Wolfe.
On television, Patterson made guest appearances on The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, Elementary, and Instinct. From 2017 to 2018, she was a series regular on the E! drama The Arrangement. In 2020, she played Josephine Baker in an episode of the HBO series Lovecraft Country. She starred in the Disney+ action comedy series Turner & Hooch in 2021, which was canceled after one season. In 2023, she joined the CBS comedy-drama series Elsbeth opposite Carrie Preston as a series regular. Following the second season, Preston announced that Patterson would transition to a guest-starring role in the third season.
