About

Carole Cook, born Mildred Frances Cook on January 14, 1924, in Abilene, Texas, was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. She was one of four children born to Leland Preston Cook Sr. and his wife, Maudine. After studying Greek drama at Baylor University and graduating in 1945, she worked in regional theater before relocating to New York by 1954. Her stage name came from Lucille Ball, who renamed her Carole after her own favorite actress, Carole Lombard, following Ball's attendance at a production of Annie Get Your Gun in which Cook appeared.

Cook's theatrical career in New York began with an off-Broadway role, playing Mrs. Peacham in the 1956 production of The Threepenny Opera, which starred Lotte Lenya. Her Broadway work, which extended from 1954 to 1984, included appearances in Romantic Comedy and the original production of 42nd Street. She also became the second actress to play Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly!, following Carol Channing in the role.

Ball's admiration for Cook led to an invitation to join Desilu Studios, which brought Cook into television work on Ball's comedy series The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy. Her television appearances extended well beyond those programs, with guest roles on shows including Magnum, P.I., Dynasty, Charlie's Angels, Murder, She Wrote, Cagney and Lacey, McMillan and Wife, Knight Rider, Emergency!, Darkroom, Grey's Anatomy, and a starring role in a Season 4 episode of Hart to Hart.

Her film credits included The Incredible Mr. Limpet, American Gigolo, Sixteen Candles, The Gauntlet, Summer Lovers, Grandview U.S.A., and Palm Springs Weekend. In The Gauntlet, she appeared early in the film as a waitress in a brief exchange with Clint Eastwood. She also provided the voice of Pearl Gesner in the Walt Disney Pictures animated film Home on the Range.

Cook married actor and writer Tom Troupe in 1964, with Lucille Ball serving as her matron of honor. The marriage lasted until Cook's death. She died of heart failure in Beverly Hills, California, on January 11, 2023, three days before what would have been her 99th birthday. In 2024, a stage production titled Carole Cook Died for My Sins, starring Mason McCulley, drew on elements of her life and career.
