About
Carmen Sylvia Mathews (May 8, 1911 – August 31, 1995) was an American actress and environmentalist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She pursued her theatrical training first at Bennett Junior College and subsequently at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her professional career began with the Stratford-on-Avon Shakespearean Company, where she took on roles including Ophelia in Hamlet and the Queen in Richard II before returning to the United States.
Mathews maintained an active Broadway presence spanning more than four decades, from 1938 to 1981. Among her stage credits were Night Life, Copperfield, The Ambassador, and Ring Round the Bathtub. In 1951, she originated the role of Theresa Tapper in Courtin' Time, a Broadway musical with music by Don Walker, lyrics by Jack Lawrence, and a book by William Roos.
Her screen work encompassed both film and television across several decades. Film appearances included Butterfield 8 (1960), A Rage to Live (1965), Rabbit, Run (1970), Sounder (1972), Top of the Hill (1980), and Daniel (1983). On television, Mathews appeared across a wide range of series, including six episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents between 1955 and 1965, a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone, a 1964 episode of The Fugitive, and a 1972 episode of Cannon. She portrayed Colonel Lilian Rayburn in episode 150 of M*A*S*H, and in 1990 was cast in the television film Last Best Year alongside Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters.
Beyond her performing career, Mathews was a committed environmentalist. In 1975, she established a residential summer camp for disadvantaged children on her 100-acre farm in Redding, Connecticut. She later made a perpetual donation of the property, known as New Pond Farm, to the Redding Land Trust, preserving its woods, fields, pond, and marsh in perpetuity. In 1987, the United Nations Association of the United States of America recognized her as one of Connecticut's outstanding women. Mathews died at her Redding farm on August 31, 1995, at the age of 84. Her papers, covering the years 1921 to 1995, are held by the Billy Rose Theatre Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
