About

Carlyle Blackwell was an American actor, director, producer, and writer born on January 20, 1884, in Troy, Pennsylvania, who built a career spanning silent film, stage, and live theatre. He studied at Cornell University before filmmaker J. Stuart Blackton recognized his potential and directed him toward acting.

Blackwell entered the film industry in 1910 when Blackton cast him in the Vitagraph Studios production of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Over the following two decades he accumulated more than 180 film appearances, working steadily through the silent era until the transition to sound effectively ended his screen acting career around 1930. In recognition of his contributions to motion pictures, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6340 Hollywood Boulevard. Beyond performing, Blackwell expanded his role in the industry as a director, with his first directorial credit being Chasing the Smuggler in 1914, and later as a producer and writer, receiving a writing credit on the 1930 film Beyond the Cities.

In 1921 Blackwell relocated to England, where he remained active in both film and theatre through 1931. Among his notable English credits was the 1922 film Bulldog Drummond, in which he played the title character in the first screen adaptation of that role. His English film work also included The Virgin Queen in 1923, Shadow of Egypt in 1924, She in 1925, Monte Carlo in 1925, The Rolling Road in 1928, and The Wrecker in 1929. He served as producer on several of these productions, including The Lodger and Blighty, both in 1927. His only sound films were Bedrock and Beyond the Cities, both released in 1930.

After completing his final film, Blackwell transitioned fully to live theatre. That stage career brought him to Broadway in 1943, where he appeared in the musical Hairpin Harmony.

Blackwell married Ruth Hartman on July 8, 1909, and the two divorced in 1923. He wed Leah Barnato in London on July 19, 1926, and that marriage ended in divorce in 1933, the same year he married Avonne Taylor. In 1934 he and Taylor purchased a farmhouse estate in Brookfield, Connecticut, though they divorced in 1936. He subsequently married Nancy Nichelson Bradsby, widow of Hillerich and Bradsby baseball bat executive Frank Bradsby, and remained married to her until her death in 1947. In 1948 he married Ann Enoch, and the two were still wed at the time of his death. Blackwell died on June 17, 1955, in Miami at the age of 71.
