Carlos Gavito

Carlos Eduardo Gavito, born April 27, 1942, in Argentina, was an Argentine tango dancer whose career spanned decades and brought him to stages across the world, including Broadway. He died on July 1, 2005, and is interred at the Cementerio de la Chacarita in Buenos Aires.

Gavito began dancing in Buenos Aires in 1956 and developed his craft over the following decades. In 1974, he worked alongside Juan Carlos Copes, a significant collaboration in his professional development. He subsequently toured internationally with his own dance company, accompanied by his dance partner and wife, Helen Gavito, who had trained at the Scottish Royal Ballet School.

In 1995, Gavito joined the production Forever Tango, directed by Luis Bravo. Helen was not included in the company, as Bravo's casting requirement restricted the ensemble to Argentine dancers, a criterion she did not meet. Throughout the 1990s, Gavito performed with Forever Tango as it traveled to eight cities along the US West Coast, where the production contributed to a growing public interest in tango. Notably, Gavito was the only English-speaking member of the company during this period.

Forever Tango transferred to Broadway in 1997, marking Gavito's Broadway credit. The production earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Choreography in 1998, as well as a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Choreography that same year.
