About
Carla Gugino was born on August 29, 1971, in Sarasota, Florida, to Carl Gugino, an orthodontist of Italian descent, and Susan Burgess, of English and Irish descent. Her parents separated when she was two, and she divided her time between her father's home in Sarasota and her mother's residences in California, which included a period living in a tepee in Paradise, California, and time spent in a van in Big Sur. As a teenager, Gugino worked as a fashion model, including with the Elite agency, and began taking acting classes with Gene Bua at the suggestion of her aunt, Carol Merrill, a former assistant and prize model on Let's Make a Deal. By the age of 16, with her parents' approval, she had become legally emancipated.
Gugino's early television work in the late 1980s and early 1990s included appearances on Good Morning, Miss Bliss, Saved by the Bell, Who's the Boss?, ALF, Doogie Howser M.D., The Wonder Years, Webster, and a recurring role on Falcon Crest. Her film work during this period included the Shelley Long comedy Troop Beverly Hills in 1989, the drama This Boy's Life in 1993, the romantic comedy Son in Law opposite Pauly Shore in 1993, and Brian De Palma's thriller Snake Eyes in 1998, in which she appeared alongside Nicolas Cage. She also appeared in the music video for Bon Jovi's 1994 song "Always." In 1995, she played Nan St. George alongside Greg Wise and James Frain in the BBC miniseries The Buccaneers, an adaptation of Edith Wharton's final novel. The following year, she played Ashley Schaeffer, the love interest of Michael J. Fox's character, during the first season of the sitcom Spin City. She appeared as Dr. Gina Simon during the final season of the television medical drama Chicago Hope from 1999 to 2000.
Gugino gained broader recognition beginning in 2001 with her role as family matriarch Ingrid Cortez in the first Spy Kids film, a part she reprised in the two sequels released in 2002 and 2003. That same year she appeared opposite Jet Li in the martial arts action thriller The One. She starred in two short-lived television series: ABC's Elmore Leonard crime drama Karen Sisco in 2003, and CBS's science fiction series Threshold, which ran from 2005 to 2006. In 2005, she appeared as Lucille in the feature film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel Sin City, and the following year she appeared in Night at the Museum opposite Ben Stiller. She appeared in a dozen episodes of the cable series Entourage as Amanda, Vincent Chase's agent. In 2007, she appeared in the feature film American Gangster, and in 2008 she played the female lead in Righteous Kill opposite Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. In 2009, three films featuring Gugino were released in quick succession: the thriller The Unborn, Watchmen, in which she played Sally Jupiter, and Race to Witch Mountain, in which she starred opposite Dwayne Johnson. She appeared in the comedy film Women in Trouble in 2009, playing a character named Elektra Luxx, which spawned a sequel of the same name in 2010. In 2011, she appeared as Madame Vera Gorsky in Zack Snyder's action-fantasy film Sucker Punch alongside Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning, and also recorded a duet with co-star Oscar Isaac that appeared in the film's end credits and soundtrack. She also guest starred on the fourth season of Californication as Abby Rhodes. In 2012, she had a lead role as Washington, D.C., investigative reporter Susan Berg in the USA Network miniseries Political Animals. In 2015, she starred opposite Dwayne Johnson again in the disaster film San Andreas.
On television, Gugino starred in the supernatural horror miniseries The Haunting of Hill House in 2018, the crime drama series Jett in 2019, The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020, and The Fall of the House of Usher in 2023. Her film work continued with Gerald's Game in 2017, Gunpowder Milkshake in 2021, and Lisa Frankenstein in 2024. In 2009, she was honored with the National Italian American Foundation's Special Achievement Award for Entertainment at the organization's 34th Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., presented by actress Connie Britton.
Gugino's Broadway career spanned from 2004 to 2012. She made her Broadway debut in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of Arthur Miller's After the Fall, opposite Peter Krause, for which she received a Theatre World Award in 2005. She subsequently appeared on Broadway in Desire Under the Elms and The Road to Mecca. Her work in Desire Under the Elms originated at the Goodman Theater in Chicago in 2009, where she played Abby in Eugene O'Neill's play and received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Play. In late 2006, between her Broadway engagements, she appeared in an Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer opposite Blythe Danner at the Atlantic Theater Company, and in 2020 she appeared in Alice Birch's Anatomy of a Suicide, also at the Atlantic Theater Company, playing the role of Carol.
