Carl Gantvoort

Carl Gantvoort (1883 – September 28, 1935) was an American actor who worked in both stage and film. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, he built a career that spanned Broadway productions, theatrical performances, and a series of silent films released in the early 1920s.

Gantvoort's stage work included a 1912 appearance as Little John in a production of Robin Hood, marking an early entry into theatrical performance. His Broadway career extended from 1912 to 1918 and encompassed several productions, among them the musical The Riviera Girl, the musical Pom-pom, in which he played the role of Bertrand, and the musical The Maid of the Mountains. He also appeared in the musical Iole as George Wayne, the play Little Simplicity, and The Geisha.

His film work was concentrated in 1921 and 1922 and included the Western Man of the Forest, Mysterious Rider, A Certain Rich Man, The Lure of Egypt, When Romance Rides, Heart's Haven, Golden Dreams, and The Gray Dawn, in which he starred.

Gantvoort came from a family with deep ties to the arts. His father, Arnold J. Gantvoort, served as manager of the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and taught classes there. His mother was Nettie Looker, a granddaughter of Othniel Looker. He had six siblings: Hermann, Gertrude, Bertha, Brunhilde, Elsa, and Helen. He married Anne Brussert, whom he had met while she was performing in a play in Ohio. The marriage took place after he finished college and ended in divorce in 1922.
