About
Carl Esmond, born Carl Cäsar Willy Simon on June 14, 1902, in Vienna, was an Austrian actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television across Europe and the United States. He died on December 4, 2004, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, at the age of 102.
Before pursuing acting, Esmond worked as a bank clerk. He trained at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Ernst Arndt, and during his time in drama school he adopted the name Willy Eichberger. Under that name he made his professional debut at the Burgtheater at age 22, subsequently performing leading stage roles in Vienna, Berlin, and Hamburg. His screen debut came in the 1933 operetta The Emperor's Waltz, and he became associated with the light romantic comedies characteristic of interwar Austrian cinema. Among his notable film credits from this period was a role in Max Ophüls' Liebelei. From 1935 to 1936 he worked as a matinee idol for UFA.
In 1933, Esmond traveled to London to appear in the musical Blossom Time, for which he used the stage name Carl Esmond — the name he would retain for all subsequent English-language work. He went on to star in the West End production of Victoria Regina as Prince Albert, replacing Vincent Price in the role, to considerable critical recognition.
Esmond arrived in Hollywood in January 1938 to play a German World War I pilot in The Dawn Patrol. While in the United States, his family received threats from Das Schwarze Korps, a newspaper operated by the Nazi SS. When the Anschluss took place three months after his arrival, he declined to return to Austria out of fear of reprisal and remained in America permanently. During World War II he frequently portrayed Nazi villains on screen, though he also took on more sympathetic parts in films including Little Men (1940) and The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944). Over the course of his Hollywood career he appeared in more than 50 films, working with directors Cecil B. DeMille, Howard Hawks, Jacques Tourneur, Edmund Goulding, Fritz Lang, and Otto Preminger.
Following the war, Esmond became a regular presence in early television productions. In 1953 he made a brief return to Europe, appearing in three films under his earlier name Eichberger, among them Max Ophüls' Lola Montès. His final screen appearance was in the 1985 made-for-television biopic My Wicked, Wicked Ways: The Legend of Errol Flynn.
Esmond also maintained a stage presence in the United States throughout his career. In 1957 he appeared on Broadway in the comedy Four Winds.
