About

Carl Lawrence Betz (March 9, 1921 – January 18, 1978) was an American actor who worked across stage, film, and television. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the eldest child of Carl W. and Mary Leona Betz, and grew up in the Pittsburgh suburbs of Crafton and Mt. Lebanon. His siblings were Mary Louise, Leona Ruth, and William Harlow. His father, a Missouri native, worked as a chemist, serving as chief chemist at a local laboratory and later for Allegheny County. Betz began acting at age ten, organizing a theatrical company with six friends that performed plays in his grandmother's basement.

After graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1939, Betz received a scholarship to Duquesne University. Beginning in 1942, he served three and a half years in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in North Africa and Italy. Following his discharge, he returned to Carnegie Tech and earned a degree in drama. He subsequently worked as a radio announcer and disk jockey before relocating to New York City, where he continued performing in summer and winter stock companies and worked for a period as a doorman at Radio City Music Hall.

Betz made his Broadway debut in 1952 in The Long Watch. That same year, in June, he married actress Lois Harmon, with whom he had a son, Richard. He also toured with Veronica Lake in the summer stock production of The Voice of the Turtle, and went on to spend eighteen months playing Collie Jordan on the CBS soap opera Love of Life. Before landing a major television role, he made guest appearances on series including Sheriff of Cochise, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Millionaire, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. During the summers of 1956 and 1957, he performed as the leading man at the Elitch Theatre, including a production of The Seven Year Itch with Anne Kimbell.

In 1958, Betz was cast as pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone opposite Donna Reed in ABC's The Donna Reed Show, a role he held for eight seasons through March 1966. The series centered on a middle-class American family, with Betz's character frequently navigating domestic situations alongside wife Donna Stone and their children Mary, played by Shelley Fabares, and Jeff, played by Paul Petersen. In a 1962 episode, Jeff Stone performed the song "My Dad" directly to Betz's character. Betz and Harmon separated in May 1960 and divorced in 1961. In December 1963, he married Gloria Stone Martin, sister of actress Nita Talbot, and gained a stepdaughter, Rio. During the show's annual hiatus, Betz continued stage work, including a 1964 limited run as Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon in The Night of the Iguana.

Producer Paul Monash, who had seen Betz's performance in The Night of the Iguana, approached him in 1967 to star in the legal drama Judd, for the Defense on ABC, in which Betz played defense attorney Clinton Judd. Betz initially believed the offer was for a guest appearance and later expressed reluctance to commit to another series, but agreed after responding favorably to the scripts. The series premiered in September 1967, ran through 1969, and earned critical praise despite struggling in the ratings. Shortly after ABC cancelled the show, Betz received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Series for his work on the program. He continued making guest appearances on television series including Mission: Impossible, The Mod Squad, Love, American Style, and Starsky & Hutch. Among his later stage roles was General Douglas MacArthur in the one-man play I Shall Return.

In 1977, Betz was diagnosed with terminal and inoperable lung cancer. He kept the diagnosis private in order to continue working. On November 29, 1977, he entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he died seven weeks later on January 18, 1978, at the age of 56. His remains were cremated. Gloria Martin Betz survived him, the two having remained together for fifteen years until his death.
