About
Campbell Scott is an American actor, film director, and producer born on July 19, 1961, in New York City. The son of actors George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst, he grew up in New York and attended John Jay High School alongside future collaborator Stanley Tucci. He went on to earn a degree from Lawrence University in 1983. His brother is Alexander Scott, and one of his paternal half-sisters is actress Devon Scott.
Scott made his first film appearance in the 1987 feature Five Corners, playing a policeman. His breakthrough came with Longtime Companion (1990), a film chronicling the early years of the AIDS/HIV epidemic and its effects on a group of American friends. He followed that with a lead role in The Sheltering Sky (1990) and co-starred with Julia Roberts in Dying Young (1991), a production in which his mother also appeared. He appeared in Cameron Crowe's Singles (1992) alongside Bridget Fonda and Kyra Sedgwick. Scott received his first Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead for his work in Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994).
In 1996, Scott co-directed the film Big Night with Stanley Tucci. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and Scott and Tucci received the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best New Director. Scott was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature for that effort. He continued his screen work with roles in The Daytrippers (1996) and The Spanish Prisoner (1997). His second Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead came for his performance in Roger Dodger (2002), for which he also received the Best Actor prize from the National Board of Review. He appeared in The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and starred in the ABC series Six Degrees in 2006.
Scott portrayed Richard Parker, the father of Peter Parker, in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and reprised the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). He later played Dr. Lewis Dodgson in Jurassic World Dominion (2022), the sixth film in the Jurassic Park franchise. Television audiences know him for recurring roles as Boris Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz on Royal Pains, Joe Tobin on Damages, and Mark Usher on House of Cards. In 2005 and 2006, he served as the reader for audiobook versions of Stephen King's The Shining and Cell, as well as Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. In 2017, he collaborated with Dutch DJ and producer Ferry Corsten on Blueprint, an album combining trance music and science fiction, for which Scott served as narrator.
Scott's Broadway career spans from 1982 to 2019 and includes productions such as Ah, Wilderness!, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Hay Fever, and The Real Thing. From 2015 to 2016, he played Lloyd Dallas in the Broadway revival of Noises Off. In 2019, he took on the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a Broadway adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Matthew Warchus. His stage work also includes The Atheist, which he performed at the Huntington Theater in Boston. Scott has been nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his theatrical work.
Scott has been married twice. He met his current wife, Kathleen McElfresh, in 2007 while both were working on separate productions at the Huntington Theater in Boston. He has three sons and lives with his family in northwest Connecticut.
