About
Caissie Shira Levy is a Canadian actress and singer born on April 15, 1981, in Ontario, Canada, best known for her work in musical theatre on Broadway and in the West End. She grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, the daughter of Mark Levy, a general practitioner, and Lisa Levy, an administrator at her husband's medical practice. Both parents are Jewish. Her two older brothers, Robi and Josh, known professionally as the Levy Brothers, work as film directors, writers, and producers. Levy attended Camp Ramah in Canada and graduated from Westdale Secondary School in 1999 before enrolling at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.
Within a week of completing her studies at AMDA in 2002, Levy was cast as Maureen Johnson in the U.S. national tour of Rent. She subsequently understudied the role of Penny Pingleton in the Toronto company of Hairspray, later covering the role of Amber Von Tussle, before going on to play Penny Pingleton in both the Broadway production in 2006 and the national touring company. In 2008, Levy starred as Elphaba in the Los Angeles sit-down production of Wicked alongside Megan Hilty as Glinda, having previously understudied the role on Broadway and briefly served as standby in Los Angeles. The following year she joined the Broadway revival of Hair as Sheila, performing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2009 and 2010, and then reprised the role in the West End revival at the Gielgud Theatre. She appears on the Broadway cast recording of Hair, released by Ghostlight Records in 2009.
Levy originated the role of Molly Jensen in Ghost: the Musical, beginning with the world premiere at Manchester Opera House in 2011 before the production moved to London's Piccadilly Theatre in the West End. In 2012 she transferred with the show to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway. She is featured on both the original cast recording and the Stand Up to Cancer EP released in connection with the production. In 2014 and 2015, Levy played Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables at the Imperial Theatre.
In 2013, Levy released the EP With You and performed two concerts at the London Hippodrome Casino. That same year she starred as Sara in the Off-Broadway production of Murder Ballad at the Union Square Theatre, directed by Trip Cullman. She has also contributed to several composer albums, including Scott Alan's re-release of Keys, Bobby Cronin's Reach the Sky: Bobby Cronin Live at the Beechman, and Jonathan Reid Gealt's Thirteen Stories Down.
Levy originated the role of Elsa in the stage adaptation of Frozen, which first opened in Denver in 2017 and moved to Broadway in February 2018. She remained with the production for two years, departing on February 16, 2020. The original Broadway cast recording was released by Walt Disney Records in 2018. From October 2021 to January 2022, Levy starred as Rose Stopnick Gellman in the Broadway transfer of Caroline, or Change. Her performance on the cast recording earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album in 2023. In the summer of 2022, she starred as Beth Ann in Sarah Silverman's Off-Broadway musical The Bedwetter. She subsequently appeared on Broadway as Eva Merz Jakobovicz in Leopoldstadt.
Levy starred as Diana Goodman in Next to Normal at London's Donmar Warehouse, with the run extending from August through October 2023. The performance earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She reprised the role when the production transferred to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End in the summer of 2024, and the original London cast recording was released by Ghostlight Records in 2025. In November 2024, Levy portrayed Mother in a production of Ragtime at New York City Center, starring opposite Colin Donnell, Brandon Uranowitz, and Joshua Henry. That production transferred to the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in September 2025 for a limited engagement scheduled to run through June 2026, with the cast recording released by Concord Theatricals Recordings in 2026. Levy had been announced to star as Lucy Emerson in a musical adaptation of The Lost Boys at Broadway's Palace Theatre beginning in March 2026, but announced in November 2025 that she would no longer be participating in the production.
On October 30, 2011, Levy married actor David Reiser in an evening ceremony at the Soho Beach House in Miami, following five years of dating. The couple's son, Izaiah, was born in February 2016, and their daughter, Talulah Ruby, was born in March 2021. Levy became a United States citizen on January 21, 2021.
