About

Caiphus Semenya is a South African composer, musician, and Broadway performer, born on 19 August 1939 in Alexandra, Gauteng, Johannesburg, South Africa. His career has spanned live theater, film, and recording across multiple decades and continents.

Semenya made his Broadway debut in 1964, appearing in the production Sponono. During that same period, he relocated from South Africa to Los Angeles, California, making the journey alongside his wife, vocalist Letta Mbulu. His move to the United States positioned him within a broad network of internationally recognized artists, and he went on to collaborate with Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Hotep Galeta, Miriam Makeba, Lou Rawls, Nina Simone, and Cannonball Adderley.

Among his notable contributions to recorded music, Semenya arranged the Swahili chant featured in the introduction to Michael Jackson's song "Liberian Girl," which appeared on the 1987 album Bad. His discography as a recording artist includes Listen to the Wind, released on CBS in 1982, Streams Today... Rivers Tomorrow on Munjale in 1984, and two releases in 1996: Woman Got a Right to Be and The Very Best of Caiphus Semenya on Columbia. He also contributed to Roots, a 1977 recording on A&M with Quincy Jones.

In 1986, Semenya received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score for the 1985 film The Color Purple, a nomination he shared with nine other composers. His recognition continued in 2015, when he received both a South African Afro Music Award and an ACT Lifetime Achievement Award for Music.
