C. E. Eldridge

C. E. Eldridge was a Broadway performer active in the late nineteenth century. Eldridge appeared on Broadway in 1887 in the production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The production in which Eldridge performed was a four-act stage adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The script was written by Thomas Russell Sullivan in collaboration with actor Richard Mansfield, who also starred in the production. Sullivan's adaptation introduced several departures from the source material, among them the creation of a fiancée for Dr. Jekyll and a more pronounced moral contrast between the Jekyll and Hyde characters.

The play first opened at the Boston Museum on May 9, 1887, before closing for revisions. A revised version subsequently opened at the Madison Square Theatre on Broadway on September 12, 1887, produced by A. M. Palmer with sets designed by Richard Marston. It was this Broadway production, arriving in the same year as the Boston premiere, in which Eldridge took part. The Madison Square Theatre run closed on October 1, 1887, after which Mansfield's company embarked on a nationwide tour.

Mansfield's dual portrayal of Jekyll and Hyde drew critical acclaim, and the production proved popular both in New York and on subsequent tour stops across the United States. The play later traveled to London, where it opened in August 1888 at the Lyceum Theatre.
