About
Byron Russell (1884–1963) was an Irish character actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television across more than four decades. Born in Ireland in 1884, he relocated to the United States in 1911 and made his Broadway debut that same year in The Quaker Girl. He would continue performing on the Broadway stage until 1959, a span of nearly half a century.
Among his stage credits were productions including Chéri, The Taming of the Shrew, Too Late the Phalarope, Legend of Lovers, and Park Avenue, Ltd. A notable stage appearance came in 1929, when Russell took part in the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's Glencairn series of plays.
Russell's screen career began with the 1920 American silent film The World and His Wife. Over the following two decades he appeared in eleven films prior to the outbreak of World War II, frequently cast in roles as authority figures. His most recognized film performance came in 1935, when he portrayed Quintal in Mutiny on the Bounty. Following the war, Russell shifted his focus primarily to television, taking on numerous roles in televised plays between 1949 and 1960.
Russell died in New York City in 1963.
