About

Burke William Moses, born December 10, 1959, in New York City, is an American actor whose career has spanned Broadway, regional theater, opera, television, and publishing. His older brother is actor Mark Moses. Moses pursued his training at Boston University and Carnegie Mellon University before establishing himself as a prominent figure in musical theater.

Moses began building his stage résumé in 1991, performing the role of Joe in The Most Happy Fella at the New York City Opera and appearing in the Off-Broadway Public Theater production of The Way of the World that May. That same summer, he took part in the Williamstown Theatre Festival's production of 1776. His Broadway debut came in 1992 when he joined the revival of Guys and Dolls as a replacement in the role of Sky Masterson. Two years later, Moses originated the role of Gaston in Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway in 1994, a performance that earned him a Theatre World Award. He subsequently reprised the role in both the Los Angeles and London West End productions of the show.

Moses continued his Broadway work into the following decade, succeeding Brian Stokes Mitchell in the dual roles of Fred Graham and Petruchio in the revival of Kiss Me, Kate in January 2001. In 2004, he appeared as Herakles in Stephen Sondheim's The Frogs. Beyond his Broadway credits, Moses participated in three New York City Center Encores! staged concert productions: DuBarry Was a Lady in 1996, Lil' Abner in 1998, and The New Moon in 2003.

His regional and touring work has been equally extensive. In 2003, Moses played Captain von Trapp in the national tour of The Sound of Music, a role he reprised in 2008 for Mirvish Productions at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, appearing opposite Elicia MacKenzie, the winner of the television competition How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?. In 2005, he played Adam in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at Goodspeed Opera House. The following year, he took on the role of El Gallo in the 2006 Off-Broadway revival of The Fantasticks. In 2012, he starred as Harold Hill opposite Kate Baldwin's Marian in The Music Man at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. He portrayed the Grinch in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in November 2014, and in December 2015 he starred in the Vineyard Theatre's Off-Broadway premiere of Gigantic.

On television, Moses appeared in the soap operas Loving, As the World Turns, and One Life to Live, and guest-starred on series including The Nanny. In 2002, he was cast as the original Gavin Stone in an unaired NBC test pilot for the sitcom Good Morning, Miami. In 2014, Moses expanded his work in the field of musical theater by authoring Stanislavski Never Wore Tap Shoes: Musical Theater Acting Craft, a book focused on acting technique for the musical stage.
