About
Bryan Dick is a British actor born on 1 February 1978 in Carlisle, England, who works across television, film, stage, and radio. He made his Broadway debut in 2024, appearing in The Hills of California.
Dick's performing career began in childhood, when at age eleven he won a scholarship to Elmhurst Ballet School, leaving home to train as a dancer. Three years into that training, ITV scouts cast him in the 1990s cult series The Life and Times of Henry Pratt, in which he played the title character. He subsequently trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, graduating in 2000.
His British television work spans several decades and includes a wide range of notable productions. Early credits include White Teeth, adapted from Zadie Smith's novel, in which he played Young Archie alongside Phil Davis as the older version of the same character; Blackpool, where he appeared as DC Blythe opposite David Tennant; and Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky, Simon Curtis's adaptation of Patrick Hamilton's trilogy, in which he co-starred with Sally Hawkins. He also appeared in The Long Firm with Mark Strong, and played Thomas Wyatt in The Virgin Queen, which starred Anne-Marie Duff. Among his Dickens adaptations, he took the role of dance teacher Prince Turveydrop in the BBC's multi-award-winning Bleak House and Freddie Trent in The Old Curiosity Shop.
Dick is perhaps most widely recognized for portraying Ernie Wise in the BBC biopic Eric and Ernie. Further television credits include the lead role opposite Kris Marshall in the ITV comedy drama Sold, Sir Richard Riche in Wolf Hall, DI Mill in Capital — based on John Lanchester's novel — and a guest appearance as Adam in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood in 2008. He also appeared in Shameless, played teacher Ian Bateley in the BBC school drama Excluded, and took part in Ordeal By Innocence, an installment of Agatha Christie's Marple starring Geraldine McEwan.
On film, Dick played Joseph Nagle alongside Russell Crowe in Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World in 2003, and appeared as a werewolf in Katja von Garnier's Blood and Chocolate in 2007. Additional film credits include Brothers of the Head in 2005 and Colour Me Kubrick in 2006, in which he co-starred with John Malkovich.
His stage career spans several prominent British venues and companies. At the Royal Court he appeared three times: in Sliding With Suzanne, directed by Max Stafford-Clark; Plasticine, directed by Dominic Cooke; and Bone, by John Donnelly. At the National Theatre, working with director Nicholas Hytner, he played Andrea Sarti in Bertolt Brecht's The Life of Galileo and Dapper in The Alchemist. He took the title role in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, with Gerard Murphy as Salieri, and also appeared at the Crucible in Edward Bond's Lear. Other stage work includes School Play at the Soho Theatre and a starring role at the Hampstead Theatre in Seminar. In 2016 he played Willie Mossop in Hobson's Choice alongside Martin Shaw in London's West End.
Dick has also maintained an active radio career, with credits on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3 including Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, Simon Tappertit in the Classic Serial adaptation of Barnaby Rudge, Arthur Kipps in Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul, and Dyer in The Exorcist, among others.
