About
Bríd Ní Neachtain is an Irish actress born in Rosmuc, in the Connemara region of Ireland, where she was raised as a native. She received her education at Coláiste Chroí Mhuire in Spiddal. Her entry into professional theatre came in her late teens, when she learned that an assistant stage manager position was becoming available at the Abbey Theatre and wrote directly to director Tomás Mac Anna to secure the role. Mac Anna subsequently gave her small parts in Irish language productions, opportunities that gradually expanded into larger roles performed in both Irish and English.
Ní Neachtain's standing at the Abbey grew following her performance in Silver Dollar Boys, after which Joe Dowling invited her to join the Abbey Actors. She remained with the company through the 1990s, when she transitioned to work on TG4's soap opera Ros na Rún. She later served as a board member of the Irish language broadcaster TG4.
Her Broadway debut came in 1991 with Dancing at Lughnasa, the production for which she is internationally recognized. Her work in that production earned her two awards in 1992: a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance and a Theatre World Special Award.
Among her screen credits, Ní Neachtain appeared in an adaptation of Máirtín Ó Cadhain's 1948 novel Cré na Cille, and in 2008 her role in that film was commemorated on an Irish 55-cent stamp. She is married to former Senator Fiach Mac Conghail, and the couple have two children.
