About
Bríd Brennan is an Irish actress born in 1955 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, whose career spans theatre, film, and television across Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She began her acting career in Dublin, performing at major venues including the Abbey Theatre, the Gate Theatre, and the Gaiety Theatre, and also toured community centres with Moving Theatre.
Brennan created the role of Agnes Mundy in Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa, originating the part in the play's 1990 Dublin production before carrying it through the West End and to Broadway in 1991. Her performance in the Broadway production earned her three awards in 1992: the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and a Theatre World Special Award. She returned to the role in Noel Pearson's 1998 film adaptation of Dancing at Lughnasa, which starred Meryl Streep and also featured Michael Gambon, an actor with whom Brennan had previously worked. Her performance in the film earned her an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actress.
Her stage work beyond Dancing at Lughnasa has earned her three Olivier Award nominations. She portrayed Janet in the National Theatre's 1994 production of Rutherford and Son, receiving an Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1995. The following year she played Lady Macbeth in the Royal Shakespeare Company's national tour of Macbeth. In 2001 she appeared in the Donmar Warehouse production of The Little Foxes, earning a second Olivier nomination in 2002. In 2014 she played Kate Keller in a production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, alongside Tom Mannion and Charles Aitken, with whom she had also appeared in The Old Vic's 2013 production of Sweet Bird of Youth. In April 2017 she originated a role in Jez Butterworth's The Ferryman at the Royal Court Theatre, with the production subsequently transferring to the Gielgud Theatre in the West End, and her performance brought her a third Olivier nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2018. In 2023 she originated the role of Mary in Dixon and Daughters at the National Theatre, a production captured for National Theatre Live.
Brennan's film career includes appearances in Maeve (1981), Anne Devlin (1984), and Mike Leigh's Four Days in July (1985), in which she played Collette, a central character in a television film based on the Troubles in Northern Ireland. She appeared in the BBC's Billy trilogy of plays for the Play for Today series between 1982 and 1984, alongside fellow Belfast natives Kenneth Branagh and James Ellis. On 31 October 1992 she starred in the BBC1 drama Ghostwatch, written by Stephen Volk and broadcast in the style of a live television programme, playing Pamela Early, the mother of a family experiencing paranormal events. The broadcast was watched by approximately 11 million viewers and generated significant public controversy. In 1995 she guest-starred in the British television series Cracker in the episode Brotherly Love, playing alongside Irish actor Lorcan Cranitch. Her 2012 film Shadow Dancer brought her further recognition, winning her both an Edinburgh International Film Festival award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film, shared with Andrea Riseborough, and an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. Director James Marsh noted that Brennan's background growing up in West Belfast during the Troubles informed her performance. In 2021 she appeared in the Irish-language crime thriller Doineann alongside Peter Coonan.
Her television credits include South Riding (2011), The Escape Artist (2013), and Doctor Who, with both of the latter productions featuring David Tennant. For RTÉ Radio 1 she played Lucia Joyce in Thomas Kilroy's In the Garden of the Asylum in 2009.
