About
Brian M. Love, born December 12, 1973, in Lorain, Ohio, is an American actor, singer, puppeteer, and martial artist whose Broadway career spans from 1996 to 2025. His stage credits include The Lion King, Rent, Sister Act, and Buena Vista Social Club, alongside four national tours and extensive regional work across the United States.
Love was raised in Lorain by his father, Houston Love, Jr., a retired educator and administrator who is the grandson of a slave and son of a sharecropper, and his mother, Laurel Ann Love (née Jennings), a retired social worker and musician. At Admiral King High School, he lettered in both baseball and basketball while participating in every school musical and talent show during his junior and senior years. He went on to earn a degree in Communications and English from John Carroll University in Cleveland and later completed graduate coursework at Boston University. His formal vocal training was conducted by Seth Riggs, the creator of the Speech Level Singing Technique, whose other students have included Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Madonna, Bette Midler, and Barbra Streisand.
On Broadway, Love performed in Disney's The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre, serving as a swing and understudy for the role of Simba while covering thirteen roles in total. The production, directed by Julie Taymor with choreography by Garth Fagan and music by Hans Zimmer, Lebo M., Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Elton John, and Tim Rice, is a Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning production. He was also an original company member of the Gazelle Tour, the first national U.S. tour of The Lion King, performing the same roles he had covered on Broadway.
Love appeared in both the first and second national tours of Jonathan Larson's Rent, known respectively as the Angel and Benny Tours, playing the principal role of Benjamin Coffin III under the direction of Michael Greif. He also toured nationally in Sister Act, produced by Whoopi Goldberg.
Among his regional credits, Love originated the role of E.F. (Frank) Farrington in the world premiere of Brooklyn's Bridge at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando. The Orlando Sentinel described his work in that production, noting that he "lights up the stage with each appearance" and "thrillingly makes the most of the most entertaining songs." In 2022, he portrayed Sebastian in Hale Centre Theatre's production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, a performance that earned him a 2023 BroadwayWorld Salt Lake City Award nomination for Best Performer in a Musical. He was also part of the cast recognized with the Best Ensemble in a Musical award for that same production. Additional regional roles include Valentin in Kiss of the Spiderwoman at Beck Center for the Arts, directed by Scott Spence; Jim in Big River at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater, directed by Victoria Bussert; Zodzetrick in the Florida premiere of Scott Joplin's Treemonisha with Opera Orlando; Carl Hanratty in Catch Me If You Can at Osceola Arts; and John Clarke in Calendar Girls at Theatre West End, for which the Orlando Sentinel noted his performance was "played with warmth and grit." He also served as bookseller, puppeteer, and fight captain in Beauty and the Beast at Maltz Jupiter Theatre, directed by John Tartaglia with choreography by Shannon Lewis.
As a recording artist, Love has worked with Motown figures Berry Gordy and Stevie Wonder. He participated in Wonder's ensemble arrangement of "Seasons of Love" from Rent and was a member of the South African singing ensemble that recorded the 2010 FIFA World Cup theme for ESPN. On television, Love performed as a singer on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon and appeared in national commercials for the NFL Fantasy Football campaign alongside David Johnson and Mike Evans, as well as a USGA Time-Friendly golf campaign. He also appeared in a stage-filmed adaptation of The Ten Commandments, performed at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles and directed by Robert Iscove with choreography by Travis Payne, featuring a cast that included Val Kilmer, Nita Whitaker, Alisan Porter, and Adam Lambert.
