Brían Francis O'Byrne is an Irish actor born on 16 May 1967 in Mullagh, a village in the south-east of County Cavan, Ireland. He trained at the Samuel Beckett Centre at Trinity College Dublin before relocating to New York City in 1990, where he was cast in the Irish Repertory Theatre production of Philadelphia, Here I Come!

O'Byrne's Broadway career spans from 1993 to 2014 and encompasses a range of dramatic roles. He first drew significant attention through two plays by Martin McDonagh: The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1996), in which he played Pato Dooley, and The Lonesome West (1997), the former earning him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He received a Theatre World Special Award in 1998. His performance as a serial killer in Frozen earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2004, as well as a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play in 2005. That same year, he appeared in Doubt: A Parable as a priest accused of child molestation, a role that brought him another Tony Award nomination. In 2007, he received a fifth Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Alexander Herzen in Tom Stoppard's trilogy The Coast of Utopia, appearing in both Part 1 (Voyage) and Part 2 (Shipwreck). His Broadway credits also include The Sisters Rosensweig, Shining City, and Outside Mullingar, John Patrick Shanley's 2014 play, for which he received a nomination for the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play.

Beyond Broadway, O'Byrne appeared in the 2004 film Million Dollar Baby as a priest. He was a series regular on the ABC drama FlashForward (2009–2010), playing Aaron Stark, a show that was not renewed for a second season. In 2011, he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role as Bert Pierce in the miniseries Mildred Pierce. In 2012, he was cast in the ABC drama pilot Gilded Lilys, created and produced by Shonda Rhimes. His performance as Steve Jones, the father of murder victim Rhys Jones, in the 2017 British drama series Little Boy Blue earned him a BAFTA TV Award.

O'Byrne was married to American actress Heather Goldenhersh, with whom he co-starred in both Doubt: A Parable and Three Women. The couple has two daughters and separated in 2024.
