Brian Charles Rooney

Brian Charles Rooney is an American actor and singer whose vocal classification as a sopranist — also designated sopranista or male soprano — distinguishes him within theatrical performance. He has additionally taken on high tenor roles across productions staged in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Rooney made his Broadway debut in 2006 with the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of The Threepenny Opera, the work composed by Kurt Weill with text by Bertolt Brecht. In that production he performed the role of Lucy Brown. The following year, in 2007, the Kurt Weill Foundation recognized his work in the production by presenting him with the Lys Symonette Award for Outstanding Dramatic Excellence.

Beyond Broadway, Rooney has performed in theatrical productions across a range of American cities, including San Francisco, Miami, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Singing as a tenor, he portrayed Tony in a European tour of West Side Story. He has also appeared as a featured soloist with both the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.

In 2013, Rooney began presenting original pop-rock material at concert venues in New York City, working as a singer-songwriter in collaboration with Paul Leschen, a composer and arranger associated with the rock band the Scissor Sisters. The following year, he starred as General George B. McClellan in Bayonets of Angst, a bluegrass musical comedy centered on the Civil War, presented as part of the 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival. For that performance he received the New York Musical Theatre Festival Award for Excellence in the category of Outstanding Individual Performance.
