About

Brendan Coyle is a British-Irish actor born David Coyle on 2 December 1962 in Corby, Northamptonshire. He holds dual British and Irish citizenship by virtue of his British birth and Irish heritage. His family connections include a notable lineage: he is the great-nephew of football manager Sir Matt Busby. He has an older brother, Shaun. Coyle began his formal training in drama in Dublin in 1981 and subsequently received a scholarship to Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London in 1983.

Coyle's stage work brought him significant recognition on both sides of the Atlantic. His performance in Conor McPherson's The Weir earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in 1999. That same production transferred to Broadway, where Coyle made his debut in 1999 and received the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut.

His screen career has encompassed a range of prominent television roles. He played Nicholas Higgins in the BBC miniseries North & South and portrayed Kaz Sweeney in the British drama True Dare Kiss. From 2008, he appeared across three BBC series of Lark Rise to Candleford, based on the novels of Flora Thompson, in the role of Robert Timmins. Beginning in 2010, he took on the role of John Bates, valet to the Earl of Grantham, in Julian Fellowes's period drama Downton Abbey. Fellowes wrote the part specifically for Coyle. The role earned Coyle a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, an IFTA nomination, and a 2012 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He also received three Screen Actors Guild Awards between 2013 and 2016 in connection with the series. He additionally appeared in the short-lived Sky comedy Starlings as Terry Starling.

In film, Coyle appeared in the 2001 production Conspiracy, playing Gestapo Chief Heinrich Müller. In July 2014, Coyle and Joy Harrison established Anderson Shelter Productions Limited, a company focused on identifying emerging filmmakers and supporting the funding of their short film projects. That September, Coyle announced his involvement with the short film Starcross, produced by Council Child Productions.
