About
Eva Brenda Fowler was born on February 16, 1883, in Jamestown, North Dakota. An American actress and writer, she built a career that spanned stage, vaudeville, and film before her death on October 27, 1942.
Fowler began her stage work in 1905 as a member of the New Ulrich stock theater company. Her early career also took her to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she spent two years performing with the American Stock Company, and to Los Angeles, where she worked with the Morosco Stock Company. She additionally performed in vaudeville, appearing in sketches with patriotic themes, including one titled The Hyphen. She collaborated with writer Ethel Clifton on scripts, and twenty of their one-act plays were staged on top-level vaudeville circuits.
Her Broadway career ran from 1911 to 1919. She appeared in The Racket in 1911 and later in Luck in Pawn in 1919.
Fowler subsequently transitioned to film, making her screen debut in 1922 with Money, Money, Money, a Preferred Pictures production. Her first talking picture was The World Moves On in 1934. She appeared in two films directed by John Ford that same decade: Judge Priest, in which she played the sister of Will Rogers, and Stagecoach, in which she portrayed the wife of a corrupt banker played by Berton Churchill.
