Brenda Bruce OBE (7 July 1919 – 19 February 1996) was an English actress born in Prestwich, Lancashire, whose work spanned theatre, film, television, and radio across six decades. She began performing as a teenager, initially working as a chorus girl before developing a stage career that would become the central focus of her professional life.
Bruce's theatrical training included work with the Birmingham Repertory Company between 1936 and 1939. She went on to become a long-standing member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where her credits included the role of Mistress Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor, a production she appeared in across multiple seasons in 1964, 1968, 1975, and 1995. In 1971, she took on the role of Irma in the RSC's staging of Jean Genet's The Balcony. Among her most significant stage achievements was originating the role of Winnie in the 1962 British premiere of Samuel Beckett's Happy Days. Her Broadway appearance came in 1953, when she performed in Gently Does It.
On television, Bruce was active from the 1950s onward, appearing in numerous dramas throughout that decade as well as co-hosting the chat programme Rich and Rich alongside her first husband, television personality Roy Rich. In 1977, she played Lucilla Edith Cavell Teatime in Murder Most English. She portrayed Aunt Dahlia in the 1990s series Jeeves and Wooster, starring Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, and took on the role of Tilda in the Doctor Who serial Paradise Towers. Additional television credits included Bea in the drama Connie and Granny Grogan in The Riff Raff Element. In 1994, she appeared in the sitcom Honey for Tea.
Her film work included a role as a prostitute killed in the opening sequence of Peeping Tom, and in 1964 she played Mary Lewis in Nightmare. Bruce received the Society of Film and Television Arts Television Award in 1962 and was named Best Actress at the BAFTA British Academy Television Awards in 1963. She was appointed OBE in the 1985 New Year Honours.
Bruce was married twice. Her first husband was Roy Rich, with whom she had two daughters; her second was actor Clement McCallin, with whom she adopted a son. McCallin died in 1977. Bruce died in London on 19 February 1996 at the age of 76.
