About

Brandy Rayana Norwood was born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi, to Willie Norwood, a gospel singer and choir director, and Sonja Norwood, a district manager for H&R Block. The family relocated to Carson, California, in 1983, where Norwood attended Bancroft Junior High School and later the Hollywood High Performing Arts Center. She is the older sister of entertainer Ray J, and through their mother, both siblings are third cousins of guitarist and singer Bo Diddley. Norwood began singing at age two through her father's work at Southside Church of Christ and entered talent shows by age eleven. At age seven, she became a fan of Whitney Houston, an influence she has cited in connection with her developing interest in music and performance.

Norwood's professional career began in 1990 when she signed with Teaspoon Productions, run by Chris Stokes and Earl Harris, who arranged work for her as a backing vocalist for the R&B group Immature and oversaw the production of a demo tape. By 1993, her parents had secured a recording contract with Atlantic Records following an audition for the company's director of A&R, Darryl Williams. To manage her daughter's career, Sonja Norwood left her job, and Norwood herself left Hollywood High School, continuing her education through private tutoring from tenth grade onward.

During the early production of her debut album, Norwood was cast in the short-lived ABC sitcom Thea, portraying the daughter of a single mother played by comedian Thea Vidale. The series ran for one season and earned Norwood a Young Artists Award nomination for Outstanding Youth Ensemble. Her self-titled debut album was released in late September 1994, peaking at number 20 on the Billboard 200. It produced three top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "I Wanna Be Down," "Baby," and "Brokenhearted," the latter a duet with Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men. The album earned Norwood Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, along with four Soul Train Music Awards and two Billboard Awards. In 1995, she served as the opening act on Boyz II Men's national tour and contributed the single "Sittin' Up in My Room" to the Batman Forever soundtrack. The following year, she collaborated with Tamia, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight on "Missing You" for the Set It Off soundtrack, earning a third Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

In January 1996, Norwood took on the lead role of Moesha Mitchell in the UPN sitcom Moesha, appearing alongside William Allen Young and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The show, originally acquired by CBS, became UPN's most-watched program and ran for six seasons before being cancelled, spawning a spin-off titled The Parkers. Norwood received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Actor/Actress for her work on the series. Also in 1997, she was selected by producer Whitney Houston to portray the title character in the television film Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, part of the Wonderful World of Disney series, alongside a multiracial cast that included Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, and Houston herself. The two-hour special drew an estimated 60 million viewers and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program. That same year, Norwood, Ray J, and their parents established The Norwood Kids Foundation to support disadvantaged youth in Los Angeles and Mississippi through arts and self-help programs.

Norwood's second album, Never Say Never, was released in 1998. She co-wrote and produced six of its tracks, including "The Boy Is Mine," a duet with Monica that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for thirteen weeks. The single earned both artists their first Grammy Award. A second single, "Have You Ever?," also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Norwood subsequently explored more experimental territory with Full Moon in 2002, which incorporated electronic production, and Afrodisiac in 2004, which drew on ambient influences. Her fifth album, Human, released in 2008, moved toward pop. In 2006, she served as a judge on the first season of America's Got Talent, and in 2010 she competed as a contestant on the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars.

Her sixth album, Two Eleven, released in 2012, featured hip-hop-oriented production. Norwood made her Broadway debut in 2015, portraying Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago, a production with which she had a Broadway association spanning from 1996 to 2013 according to verified records. She released her seventh studio album, B7, in 2020, followed by her first Christmas album, Christmas with Brandy, in 2023. Across her recording career, Norwood has been certified as selling 17 million albums and singles in the United States and is the recipient of a Grammy Award and an American Music Award. She is recognized as an influential figure in contemporary R&B, known in particular for her intricate vocal style.
