About

Bramwell Fletcher was an English actor born on 20 February 1904 in Bradford, England, who worked across stage, film, and television until his death on 22 June 1988. He first appeared on stage in 1927 and made his Broadway debut two years later, in 1929, launching a theatrical career that would span nearly three decades on the New York stage.

Fletcher entered films in 1928 with S.O.S. and went on to work in Hollywood during the early sound era. Among his film roles, he appeared opposite John Barrymore in Warner Brothers' 1931 production Svengali, and the following year took a brief but memorable part in The Mummy (1932), playing the assistant who descends into madness. In 1943, Fletcher stepped away from film work to concentrate on theatre and television.

His Broadway credits included Lovers, the comedy Little Glass Clock, The Wisteria Trees, Maggie, and Candida, with his stage appearances continuing through 1956. In 1965, he wrote and performed in The Bernard Shaw Story, a play that received critical success.

Fletcher was married four times. His first two wives were both actresses: Helen Chandler, whom he married in 1935 and divorced in 1940, and Diana Barrymore, daughter of his Svengali co-star John Barrymore, whom he married in 1942 and divorced in 1946. In 1950 he married Susan Robinson, with whom he had three children — Whit, Kent, and Catherine. His fourth marriage, in 1970, was to Lael Tucker Wertenbaker. The couple lived in Nelson, New Hampshire, relocating to Keene in 1985, where Fletcher remained until his death.
