About
Boyd Payne Gaines, born May 11, 1953, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American actor whose career spans stage, film, and television. The son of James and Ida Gaines, he began his theatrical training at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, where he performed in plays, musicals, and opera. He subsequently attended the Juilliard School, completing his studies in the Drama Division as a member of Group 8 between 1975 and 1979.
Gaines accumulated four Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards over the course of his Broadway career, which extended from 1989 to 2012. His first Broadway appearance came in The Heidi Chronicles in 1989, for which he received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He went on to appear in the musicals She Loves Me in 1993, Company in 1995, and Contact in 2000. His role in Contact brought him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical that year. In 1994, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for She Loves Me. Gaines appeared in the 2008 revival of Gypsy as Herbie, earning him a second Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Additional Broadway credits include the 2010 revival of Driving Miss Daisy, the 2012 production of The Columnist, and the 2012 Broadway revival of An Enemy of the People.
A nomination for Best Actor in a Play in 2007 for Journey's End made Gaines the first actor to receive nominations in all four Tony categories for which an actor is eligible. He won in three of those categories across four of his five nominations, with the Journey's End nomination being the sole instance in which he did not win. The other performers to have been nominated across all four acting categories are Raúl Esparza, Angela Lansbury, Jan Maxwell, and Audra McDonald.
Beyond Broadway, Gaines appeared Off-Broadway as early as 1978 in Spring Awakening, and later in The Grand Manner by A. R. Gurney at Lincoln Center in 2010. In regional theatre, he performed in Our Town at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey in April 2014.
On television, Gaines is best known for portraying Mark Royer, the character who married Valerie Bertinelli's Barbara Cooper on One Day at a Time, a role he held from 1981 to 1984 across the show's final three seasons. His other television appearances include Fame, Frasier, L.A. Law, Law and Order, and Piece of Cake. His film credits include the role of Coach Brackett in the 1981 film Porky's, Jason in The Sure Thing in 1985, and Lt. Ring in Heartbreak Ridge in 1986. Gaines has also worked as a voice actor and has recorded several audiobooks. He is married to Kathleen McNenny, and the couple has one daughter.
