About
Bonnie Langford, born Bonita Melody Lysette Langford on 22 July 1964 in Middlesex, is an English actress, dancer, and singer who grew up in Surrey. She trained at the Arts Educational School, St Catherine's School in Twickenham, and the Italia Conti Academy. Her professional career began at an unusually early age: at six, she won the talent competition Opportunity Knocks, which led directly to stage and screen work. Her earliest credits included the role of Scarlett O'Hara's daughter in the London production of Scarlett in 1972 and a regular slot on the Yorkshire Television children's series Junior Showtime alongside Lena Zavaroni, Neil Reid, and others.
Langford made her Broadway debut in the 1974 revival of Gypsy, which starred Angela Lansbury, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical in 1975. She returned to Broadway in subsequent decades, with credits also including Chicago and Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends. Her Broadway career spans from 1974 to 2025. On 23 October 2005, she performed in Children Will Listen, a tribute concert marking Sondheim's 75th birthday at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
Her West End work has been extensive. She appeared in Cats, The Pirates of Penzance, Peter Pan, and Chicago, playing Roxie Hart in the latter during runs in 2006 and again in 2009 and 2010. In 2012, she originated the role of Roz in the first UK tour of 9 to 5, which launched at the Opera House in Manchester. In 2018, she took over the leading role of Dorothy Brock in the West End revival of 42nd Street, performing until the production closed on 5 January 2019; a recording from that run was broadcast as part of PBS's Great Performances in November 2019. From November 2025, Langford has played Mrs. Bird in Paddington the Musical at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End.
Television audiences first came to know Langford widely through her portrayal of Violet Elizabeth Bott in the BBC series Just William, which aired from 1977 to 1978. Between 1986 and 1987, she played Mel, companion to both the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, in Doctor Who. She reprised the role in the 1993 charity special Dimensions in Time and in numerous audio dramas opposite Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. She returned to the television series in 2022 for a cameo in the episode The Power of the Doctor, made a further surprise appearance in the 2023 60th Anniversary story The Giggle, and appeared in the two-part 2024 finale The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday. She returned to the series again for the 2025 season finale.
From 2015 to 2018, Langford played Carmel Kazemi, the mother of established character Kush Kazemi, on the BBC soap opera EastEnders, a role that began as a guest appearance before being expanded to a regular part. Her performance earned her the 2016 British Soap Award for Best Newcomer. In 2021, she appeared on The Masked Dancer as Squirrel, reaching the final and finishing as runner-up.
Langford co-presented the BBC One dance series The Hot Shoe Show with Wayne Sleep and has been a recurring presence in pantomime, including the role of Peter in Peter Pan at the Richmond Theatre in 2008 and 2009, and Fairy Snow in Cinderella at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford in 2013 and 2014. She competed in the first series of ITV's Dancing on Ice in 2006, partnering with professional skater Matt Evers and finishing third, and returned for the ninth and final series in 2014, partnered with Andrei Lipanov. She also toured with Torvill and Dean's Dancing on Ice: The Tour in 2007 and 2008.
In her personal life, Langford married Paul Grunert in 1995; the couple have one daughter and divorced in 2015. She is the aunt of actresses Summer, Scarlett, Zizi, and Saskia Strallen.
