About

Bonnie Bartlett Daniels, born June 20, 1929, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, is a retired American actress whose career extended across approximately seven decades in television, film, and theater. The daughter of Carrie Archer and Elwin Earl Bartlett, she was raised in Moline, Illinois, where her father had previously worked as an actor in stock productions before her mother's preference for a settled life brought the family to the region. Bartlett graduated from Moline High School in 1947 and subsequently attended Northwestern University, earning her degree in 1951.

Her television career began in earnest in 1955 when she took on the role of Vanessa Dale Raven on the daytime drama Love of Life, replacing actress Peggy McCay and remaining with the series until 1959. She transitioned to nighttime programming in the 1960s and, for a period, accepted primarily guest appearances on series including Gunsmoke, The Rockford Files, The Waltons, and The Golden Girls. Her role as Grace Snider Edwards on Michael Landon's Little House on the Prairie, which she held from 1974 to 1977, began as an infrequent recurring part before expanding as her character's courtship and marriage to Isaiah Edwards, played by Victor French, became a more prominent storyline between 1975 and 1977.

Bartlett's career gained considerable momentum in the 1980s. She appeared in the television miniseries V and North and South: Book II, and in 1988 played the mother of the characters portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in the film Twins. Her most celebrated television work came through the medical drama St. Elsewhere, where she played Ellen Craig, the wife of Dr. Mark Craig. The role grew substantially during the 1984–1985 season, when storylines explored the Craigs' marital difficulties. Subsequent seasons brought further dramatic material, including the death of their son, the raising of their granddaughter, a divorce, a slow reconciliation, and ultimately the loss of their granddaughter in a custody dispute. Bartlett won back-to-back Emmy Awards for the portrayal.

Her husband, actor William Daniels, played Dr. Mark Craig on the same series, and in 1986 the two became the second real-life married couple to win acting Emmy Awards on the same night, a distinction previously achieved by Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in 1965. Bartlett and Daniels had met at Northwestern University and married on June 30, 1951. They later appeared together again when Bartlett played a college dean whose character employed and eventually married the character Daniels portrayed in a season of his ABC series Boy Meets World. Both also served on the board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild.

Following the conclusion of St. Elsewhere in 1988, Bartlett continued in a range of guest and recurring television roles, including a corrupt matriarch in Wiseguy, Andrea Drey on seaQuest DSV, Lucille Taylor on Home Improvement, and Ruth Katherine Greene, the mother of Dr. Mark Greene, on ER. She also appeared in the feature film Valediction.

Bartlett's stage work placed her on Broadway between 1957 and 1963. Her credits during that period include the comedy The Tunnel of Love, Come Blow Your Horn, and Natural Affection. In her personal life, Bartlett and Daniels adopted two sons, Michael, who became an assistant director and stage manager in Los Angeles, and Robert, who became an artist and computer graphics designer based in New York City. The couple has four grandchildren. Bartlett has been inducted into the Hall of Honor at Moline High School, and in 2023 she published a memoir, Middle of the Rainbow: How a wife, mother and daughter managed to find herself and win two Emmys, through BearManor Media.
