About
Bobby Cannavale, born May 3, 1970, in Union City, New Jersey, is an American actor whose career spans theater, television, and film. The son of Salvatore "Sal" Cannavale, who is of Italian descent, and Isabel Cannavale, who is Cuban and immigrated to the United States in 1960, Cannavale grew up in Union City before his parents divorced when he was thirteen. Following the divorce, his mother relocated the family to Puerto Rico for two years before settling in Margate, Florida. Cannavale attended Coconut Creek High School from 1983 to 1986 but was expelled during his senior year and returned to New Jersey to live with his grandmother. He earned his diploma from Union Hill High School through summer school. His uncle is Enzo Cannavale, an Italian actor who appeared in the Academy Award-winning film Cinema Paradiso. Cannavale was raised Catholic and attended St. Michael's Catholic School, where he served as an altar boy and sang in the chorus. His early interest in performance was shaped by playing the role of Winthrop in a school production of The Music Man and later a gangster in Guys and Dolls.
Cannavale began his professional acting career in theater without formal training and made his early film appearances in Night Falls on Manhattan in 1997 and The Bone Collector in 1999. His television breakthrough came with the NBC series Third Watch, in which he played FDNY paramedic Roberto "Bobby" Caffey from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, he starred alongside Alan Arkin in 100 Centre Street, written and directed by Sidney Lumet. He joined the final five episodes of Ally McBeal in 2002 and subsequently appeared in the miniseries Kingpin. From 2004 to 2006, he recurred on Will & Grace as Vince D'Angelo, the boyfriend and eventual husband of Will Truman, a role that earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 2005. He guest-starred in Nurse Jackie during its fourth and fifth seasons in 2012 and 2013, receiving Emmy nominations in both years for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. In 2012, he joined the cast of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, portraying Gyp Rosetti in the third season, a performance that won him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2013. Additional television credits include Blue Bloods, Mr. Robot, Vinyl, Master of None, the Amazon Prime series Homecoming from 2018 to 2020, the Hulu miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers in 2021, in which he played Tony Hogburn opposite Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy, and the Netflix series The Watcher in 2022, in which he portrayed Dean Braddock.
On Broadway, Cannavale's career spans 2007 to 2025 and includes productions such as Art, The Lifespan of a Fact, Barack on Broadway, Mauritius, Glengarry Glen Ross, and The Big Knife. He made his Broadway debut in Theresa Rebeck's play Mauritius in 2008, playing the role of Dennis, a performance that earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 2011, he starred in Stephen Adly Guirgis's The Motherfucker with the Hat alongside Chris Rock and Annabella Sciorra, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play on May 3, 2011, his forty-first birthday. That same year, he received both the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play and the Theatre World Lunt-Fontanne Award for Ensemble Excellence. In 2012, he portrayed Richard Roma in the revival of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross.
