About
Robert Patrick Gunton Jr. was born on November 15, 1945, in Santa Monica, California, to Rose Marie (née Banouetz) and Robert Patrick Gunton Sr., a labor union executive. Raised as a devout Catholic, Gunton initially pursued a vocation to the priesthood. He attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, and the Paulist Seminary St. Peter's College in Baltimore, Maryland, before earning a Bachelor of Arts in drama from the University of California, Irvine in 1968.
Following his graduation, Gunton served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 as a radio telephone operator with the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. He was present during the 23-day siege at the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord in South Vietnam and was among the last personnel to evacuate the base. In the evacuation's final moments, he and a fellow soldier returned to retrieve radios that had been left behind to prevent them from falling into the hands of advancing People's Army of Vietnam forces, an act for which both men were awarded the Bronze Star. During the battle, Gunton lost one of his dog tags; it was returned to him more than four decades later, in 2018.
Gunton's Broadway career spans 1977 to 1989 and includes productions such as Working, King of Hearts, How I Got That Story, Roza, Big River, Passion, and two roles for which he received Tony Award nominations for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The first nomination came for his portrayal of Juan Perón in the original 1980 Broadway production of Evita. The second followed his performance in the title role of the 1989 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. His stage work also earned him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical in 1980, an Obie Award, and a Clarence Derwent Award.
Beyond Broadway, Gunton built an extensive career in film and television, frequently cast in authoritarian or institutional roles. He portrayed Warden Samuel Norton, the primary antagonist of The Shawshank Redemption, opposite Tim Robbins in the 1994 prison drama. Additional film credits include Chief George Earle in Demolition Man (1993), Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in Argo, President Woodrow Wilson in Iron Jawed Angels (2004), and Cecil Dobbs in The Lincoln Lawyer (2011). He also appeared in the 1985 HBO film Finnegan Begin Again alongside Robert Preston and Mary Tyler Moore, and served as a body double for Harold Ramis's character Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021).
On television, Gunton guest starred as Captain Benjamin Maxwell in the 1991 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Wounded" and portrayed President Richard Nixon in a recreation of the Watergate tapes incident for Nightline. He appeared in the first season of Desperate Housewives as Noah Taylor and recurred across multiple seasons of 24 as Secretary of Defense Ethan Kanin, a role he reprised in the television prequel film 24: Redemption and later returned to in the show's eighth season as Secretary of State. He also portrayed Leland Owlsley in the 2015 television series Daredevil and made a guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in January 2017.
