About
Billy Rayes was an American actor, juggler, and mimic who performed on Broadway between 1935 and 1939. His stage credits included the revue George White's Scandals and Earl Carroll's Sketch Book, the latter produced in 1935.
Beyond his Broadway work, Rayes maintained an active career in other performance contexts. He traveled to Australia, where he was engaged to play the male juvenile role in the 1938 film Dad and Dave Come to Town. During that production he worked alongside his wife, Leila Steppe, an American model. Following the completion of filming, Rayes returned to the United States, which remained his primary base of operations. He nonetheless made periodic return visits to Australia, appearing regularly on the Tivoli Circuit.
