About
Billy O'Connor was a performer and jazz musician whose career spanned both Broadway and Canadian television. He appeared on Broadway in 1946 in the musical Show Boat.
In 1954, O'Connor became the host of a Canadian variety television series on CBC Television. The program, which bore his name, featured a small house band consisting of Vic Centro on accordion, Kenny Gill on guitar, and Jackie Richardson on bass. Jack Duffy and Bill Isbister appeared on the series with regularity. CBC publicity described O'Connor as "a man you'd like to get to know." The 20-minute program aired on Saturdays at 11:10 p.m., following the NHL hockey broadcast.
Beginning on August 20, 1955, Juliette joined the series as a regular performer. An adversarial relationship between O'Connor and Juliette ultimately contributed to the cancellation of his series in May 1956. The program ran from October 16, 1954 through May 19, 1956. Following O'Connor's series, Juliette launched her own program in the same time slot that October. Sylvia Murphy subsequently became the vocalist on future series O'Connor hosted.
