About
Bill Sherman is an American composer, producer, arranger, and orchestrator born in New York to Susan B. Sherman and Dr. Fredrick T. Sherman. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 2002.
In 2003, Sherman and his roommate Lin-Manuel Miranda formed the freestyle rap group Freestyle Love Supreme. Simultaneously, Sherman worked alongside Miranda to orchestrate and arrange the music for In the Heights, a collaboration that earned him the 2008 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations as well as the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Sherman later reunited with Miranda as a producer on the Hamilton album, which brought him the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. His Broadway credits include Freestyle Love Supreme, which appeared on Broadway in 2021.
Beyond the stage, Sherman serves as musical director for multiple Sesame Workshop productions, including Sesame Street, for which he has written more than 3,000 songs. His work on the series has earned him three Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Original Song – Children's and Animation: for "What I Am" in 2011, "The Power of Yet" in 2015, and "A Song About Songs" in 2018. Sherman is also a member of Team Supreme, which co-hosts the Questlove Supreme podcast.
