About

Bill Raymond, born William Joseph Raymond on September 9, 1938, is an American actor whose career spans film, television, theater, and radio drama dating back to the 1960s. His work across these mediums has included both experimental stage productions and mainstream Hollywood films.

Raymond's theater career began in San Francisco in the 1960s, when he was active in the early days of the R.G. Davis Mime Troupe. He later became a co-artistic director and active member of the experimental theater group Mabou Mines during the 1970s and 1980s. His stage work extended to regional theater as well, most notably at Hartford Stage, where he portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge in the production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol for 17 of its first 19 years before stepping away from the role in 2016. On Broadway, Raymond appeared in 2008 in the musical Gypsy.

On television, Raymond is perhaps best known for his recurring role as "The Greek," the enigmatic leader of an international criminal organization, in the second and fifth seasons of the HBO drama The Wire. His other television credits include Miami Vice, Law & Order, Third Watch, Ed, and As the World Turns. In 2015, he played Grand Albert in the children's series Super Wings, and the following year he co-starred as Dr. Carroll in The Cobblestone Corridor, which premiered on October 16, 2016, on Connecticut Public Television.

Raymond's film work is extensive. He appeared in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Schuyler Colfax. His other film credits include Eight Men Out, Michael Clayton, C.H.U.D., The Crow, Quick Change, How I Got into College, My New Gun, 12 Monkeys, and Dogville. In 2014, he took the lead role in the ghost film Foreclosure, opposite Michael Imperioli. Raymond also appeared in seven films by Vermont independent filmmaker Jay Craven, among them Where the Rivers Flow North, A Stranger in the Kingdom, In Jest, The Year That Trembled, Windy Acres, Disappearances, and Peter and John.

In the realm of audio drama, Raymond has portrayed the archaeologist T.J. Teru in all 13 chapters of the ZBS Foundation's series Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe, produced between 1982 and 2018. He has also appeared in additional ZBS productions, including Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Fat Cats, Do That in Real Life?, and the audio adaptation of Dinotopia.
