About
William Goldwyn Nunn III was born on October 20, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Frances Nunn and William G. Nunn, Jr., a journalist, editor at the Pittsburgh Courier, and NFL scout. His paternal grandfather was the first African American football player at George Westinghouse High School. Nunn graduated from Schenley High School in 1970 and went on to earn a degree from Morehouse College in 1976, where he was a classmate of filmmaker Spike Lee.
Nunn's screen career began with his credited film debut in Lee's 1988 production School Daze. He became widely recognized for playing Radio Raheem in Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989) and Duh Duh Duh Man, the bodyguard of Nino Brown, in New Jack City. He continued working with Lee on Mo' Better Blues and He Got Game. His film credits also include Regarding Henry, Sister Act, Canadian Bacon, The Last Seduction, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Runaway Jury, and Firehouse Dog. From 2002 through 2007, Nunn portrayed Daily Bugle editor Joseph "Robbie" Robertson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy. On television, he co-starred in the sitcom The Job from 2001 to 2002 and in Sirens from 2014 to 2015. He also appeared in the 2016 televised adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun and in the film Randy and The Mob.
Nunn's stage work included August Wilson's Fences, a Pittsburgh-set play in which he performed alongside Anthony Mackie, who portrayed his character's son. In 2004, Nunn appeared on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun. He also founded a Pittsburgh-area community outreach project in 2008.
Nunn was married to Donna Watts, and together they had a daughter, Cydney. He died of leukemia on September 24, 2016, at his home in Pittsburgh's Hill District at the age of 62.
