About

William Harrison Gunn was born on July 15, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died on April 5, 1989, in Nyack, New York. A playwright, novelist, actor, and film director, Gunn produced a body of work spanning theater, film, and television over nearly four decades.

Gunn began his formal training in 1950, studying acting with Mira Rostova in New York's East Village. Four years later, he made his Broadway debut in The Immoralist, a 1954 production in which he appeared alongside James Dean. Through that production, Gunn became part of a social circle that included Montgomery Clift, Eartha Kitt, and Marlon Brando. He later appeared on Broadway in Black Picture Show, which was produced at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in 1975.

As a playwright, Gunn wrote more than 29 plays during his lifetime. His earliest produced work, Marcus in the High Grass, was staged by the Theatre Guild in 1959. His play Johnnas, first produced at the Chelsea Theatre in New York City in 1968, was later adapted as a television screenplay for NBC and won an Emmy Award in 1972. Black Picture Show received a staged reading adaptation for film in 2021, directed by Awoye Timpo. Gunn's final play, The Forbidden City, opened at the Public Theater in New York City on April 6, 1989, the day after his death. He also authored two novels: All the Rest Have Died, published by Delacorte in 1964, and Rhinestone Sharecropping, published in 1981.

Gunn's work in film included several produced screenplays. He co-wrote the screenplay for The Angel Levine in 1970 with Ronald Ribman, an adaptation of a Bernard Malamud novel released by United Artists, and also wrote the screenplay for The Landlord that same year, an adaptation of Kristin Hunter's 1966 novel, also released by United Artists. His directorial debut was intended to be Stop!, a 1969 production funded by Warner Bros. that would have made him the second African American to direct a studio film. The film was shelved before release, and the studio later stated it no longer had the print in its archives, though a 35mm print was screened at a retrospective following Gunn's death and a VHS copy was located by co-star Jack Hoffmeister. Gunn wrote and directed Ganja & Hess in 1973 for Kelly-Jordan Enterprises, a horror film that was later re-edited and released under the title Blood Couple by Heritage Enterprises. The film was selected as one of the ten best American films of the decade at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. Gunn also acted in Kathleen Collins's film Losing Ground.

Gunn shared a house in Nyack, New York with Sam Waymon, the brother of singer Nina Simone. Waymon composed the musical score for Ganja & Hess and was among the collaborators who organized a 2021 exhibition at the New York gallery Artists Space titled Till They Listen: Bill Gunn Directs America, dedicated to Gunn's work and legacy. Other organizers of that program included Hilton Als, Jake Perlin, Nicholas Forster, Awoye Timpo, Chiz Schultz, and Ishmael Reed. Gunn died at age 54 from encephalitis at a hospital in Nyack, New York.
