About
Bill Campbell is an American actor born on July 7, 1959, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He attended Fork Union Military Academy, Western Albemarle High School, and New Trier East High School before relocating to Chicago, where he enrolled at the American Academy of Art College. He ultimately shifted his focus to acting, training at the Ted Liss Studio and the Second City Training Center.
Campbell's early television work included single-episode appearances on Hotel and Family Ties before he landed his first lead role as Luke Fuller, Steven Carrington's lover during the fifth season of Dynasty. He subsequently took on a regular role as Detective Joey Indelli on the NBC series Crime Story, which aired from 1986 to 1988. During this period, Campbell was the producers' first choice to play William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, though the role ultimately went to Jonathan Frakes following the intervention of Paramount Television head John Pike. Campbell did appear on the series as a guest star in its second season, portraying the title character in the episode "The Outrageous Okona."
In 1991, Campbell played the titular role of Cliff Secord, also known as The Rocketeer, in the superhero film of the same name, opposite Jennifer Connelly. The following year, he appeared on Broadway in the play Hamlet and also took the role of Quincey Morris, a Texan vampire hunter, in Bram Stoker's Dracula. In 1993, he starred in the short-lived detective series Moon Over Miami and portrayed Dr. Jon Fielding in the television adaptation of Tales of the City, a role he reprised in More Tales of the City in 1998 and Further Tales of the City in 2001. That same year, he appeared in the historical film Gettysburg.
Campbell began his role as Rick Sammler on the drama series Once and Again in 1999, opposite Sela Ward. The series ran for three seasons until 2002, and his performance earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama. In 2002, he appeared in the film Enough, playing an abusive husband opposite Jennifer Lopez. The following year, he portrayed serial killer Ted Bundy in the television film The Stranger Beside Me. From 2004 to 2007, he had a regular role as Jordan Collier on the sci-fi series The 4400 on the USA Network, and in 2005 he had a recurring role on The O.C.
In 2011, Campbell joined the AMC series The Killing, an American adaptation of a Danish series, playing Darren Richmond, a role he held through 2013. That same year, he portrayed Abraham Lincoln in the National Geographic television adaptation of Killing Lincoln. He played Dr. Alan Farragut on the series Helix from 2014 to 2015. From 2017 to 2020, Campbell starred as Detective John Cardinal in the Canadian CTV drama series Cardinal, winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Film at the 6th, 7th, and 8th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. In 2000, People magazine named him one of the World's 50 Most Beautiful People.
In his personal life, Campbell was engaged to Jennifer Connelly from 1991 until 1996. He holds permanent resident status in Canada and lived for several years in Vancouver, British Columbia. He resides with his wife, Anne, and their two children on her family's farm in Moss, Norway. Campbell has played rugby for the Virginia Rugby Football Club, the Chicago Lions RFC, and the Santa Monica Rugby Club.
